Carved from c. 5,000 year old bogpine - dated by Queen's University Belfast and taken from the bog by the artist herself from the West coast of Ireland.
An abstracted style totem pole inspired by the stone figures on Boa Island, Co. Fermanagh specifically the Dreenan Figure. Thought to be from the Iron Age period. They had the janiform type feature of double-headed which inspired Seamus Heaney's poem "January God". I indented the top of the work and gilded this area to highlight an opening for votive offerings to the Gods. The gilding is usually 24carat gold and the base is bronze. to reflect the value this timber and its inspiration hold for me.

SOLD Bronze Head
Inspired by the Iron age bog body phenomenon. The head is distorted and compressed after millennia lying in the bog. The bronze was darkened to represent the 'tanning' process within the bog that preserves but also darkens the skin.
Rock art markings can be found etched throughout the piece. These were symbols found in rocky landscapes and at tombs and not only in Ireland but a global phenomenon. There are various interpretations some say territorial notices, star maps so it was an early symbolic anguage of type.
